Honeywell’s European office based in Brussels, Belgium, but with associates from all over the European Union, met on the island of Madeira in Portugal for a Build-A-Bike® team workshop! The participants work very closely together, but mostly via phone, email, and video conference, so they typically get together once a year for an annual meeting to improve communication, build teamwork, and have a little fun. The Build-A-Bike® event itself was a lot of fun, and the participants loved the activities, but for one of the few times since we started doing charity team building events, the venue greatly overshadowed the event. The event was held at the CS Madeira Hotel at Estrada Monumental 175-177, Funchal, Madeira, Portugal 9000-100, and the hotel was exquisite, and the hotel sits atop a cliff overlooking the ocean. The participants went to the ocean facing side of the hotel, and rode an elevator down about 100 ft to the boat slips, so their team building activity was a secluded spot on the island that looked like we had stepped back in time about 400 years. It was just perfect!
I want to give a special thanks to Honeywell, because, I arrived a couple days before the event to make sure I was over the jet lag, and my client surprised me my first morning on the island with an island tour. I can’t say enough about the generosity of Honeywell or the beauty of the island. Madeira is a self-sustaining island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean about half way between Spain and Venezuela, and it has been self-sustaining since the days of Columbus. In fact, the people of Madeira claim that the island was the last stop of Columbus before he reached America. When I returned home, I jokingly told my friends that, “It was a good thing that my wife and kids hadn’t come on the trip with me, because I might not have come back home.”
The night before the meeting, Honeywell had a dinner at the hotel, and they had a group of native singers and dancers joined us to entertain us with a few traditional songs and dances that have been entertaining people on the island for hundreds of years. Just like with Build-A-Bike® location, as this fantastic group were performing, I felt like I had time-warped back a couple of centuries. If you are a history buff like I am, you will love visiting Madeira. This whole trip was an incredible experience, and I wouldn’t have missed it for the world. Thanks to Honeywell for organizing a fantastic meeting for your people and for including The Leader’s Institute® in your team building activity.
If you are looking for fun place to hold an annual meeting, your team will love Madeira!
